Caring for Your Cork Wrist Rest
Good news! Cork is very low maintenance and with proper care, your cork products will maintain their appearance and functionality for years to come.
Protecting Your Cork Surface
Cork is naturally soft and can be vulnerable to scratches and gouges. To maintain its pristine condition:
- Avoid Sharp Objects: Remove or cover sharp metal jewelry, watches, or rings when using your cork product. These can easily scratch or gouge the delicate surface.
- Gentle Handling: Treat the cork with care, avoiding dragging heavy or sharp items across its surface.
- Damage Repair: If minor gouging occurs, you can gently sand the affected area with 180-grit sandpaper to smooth out imperfections. After sanding, re-oil the surface to restore its protective finish and appearance.
- Do not bend: The cork can break if bent too far.

Cleaning
Regular maintenance is key to preserving the quality of your cork items:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to wipe down the surface. Avoid saturating the cork with water.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the cork's natural structure.
Pro Tip: Always blot spills immediately to prevent staining or water damage.
Oil Maintenance
Since your cork product has been treated with food-safe butcher block oil, periodic re-oiling is crucial to maintain its protective finish:
- Frequency: Re-oil when the surface begins to look dry or worn.
-
Oil Application:
- Clean the surface thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry.
- Apply a thin, even layer of food-safe butcher block oil using a soft, clean cloth.
- Allow the oil to absorb for 15-20 minutes.
- Wipe away any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth.
I recommend Howard Cutting Board Oil which can be found on Amazon or Home Depot.

What to Avoid
To protect your cork product:
- Keep away from direct heat sources or prolonged sun exposure
- Avoid soaking or submerging in water
- Do not use in dishwashers or microwave
- Prevent extended contact with very hot or very cold items
